There may come a time when you need to send someone a PDF that contains sensitive information, such as your tax information, financial details, Social Security number, or other data. Naturally, you don’t want that information falling into the wrong hangs. If you password-protect your document, only someone with the password can open the file. Encrypting a Word Document may be your best option for collaborating with others, but a PDF is the right choice for sending important records. However, there are some complications here. Not only will you need to figure out a way to share the password securely, but the free version of Adobe Reader does not support password protection. You could purchase the full Adobe Acrobat program, but that’s a pricey prospect if you require only the occasional password. Instead, a variety of third-party programs and online services will let you slap a password onto your file for free.Adobe Acrobat PlansIf you pay for Acrobat, Acrobat Pro DC will run you $14.99 a month for an annual subscription or $24.99 a month for a monthly subscription. Acrobat Standard DC will cost you $12.99 a month for an annual subscription or $22.99 a month for a monthly subscription. Both versions support password protection, so you can save yourself a few dollars here by going with the cheaper Standard plan.If you need a password just this one time or for the next several days, snag a free seven-day trial for Acrobat Pro. The only requirement here is that you will have to supply your credit card information to download the free trial. Just make sure to cancel before the seven days are up or you’ll be charged $14.99 plus tax for the full month.Password ProtectAfter installing Acrobat Pro, launch the program and open the PDF you want to protect. Click File > Protect Using Password, then decide if you want the recipient to enter a password for viewing or for editing the document. In most cases, you'll want to enable a password for viewing so no one can even open the file without the proper credentials. Select Viewing, then type and retype a strong password in the appropriate fields. The program will measure the strength of your password; click Apply to save. Some documents, such as editable forms, may not be able to use password protection. In these cases, you might bump into an error message telling you that the file could not be saved due to a bad parameter. The trick here is to save a copy of the file and then password protect the copy. In Acrobat, click the File > Save a copy and give the copy a different name than the original. Acrobat Desktop Configuration WindowsNoteThe AcroCleaner is not an uninstaller and should NOT be used as such. Adobe provides the utility as a least resort to repair machines after a failed or partial uninstall. Always uninstall products via standard, supported methods. The Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool removes a standalone installation of Reader or Acrobat, including any leftover preferences and settings remaining after a standard program uninstall. While most installs, uninstalls, and updates operations happen without incident, there are cases where a user may not be able to complete such tasks due to some registry or file conflict on the machine. This is particularly problematic when permissions set on plist entries or files prevent the successful installation of new installs and/or updates. The cleaner tool fixes such issues by cleaning up corrupted installations, removing or fixing corrupted files, removing or changing permissions registry entries, etc.Note the following:The tool provides options for removing problematic Acrobat items only while leaving Reader untouched and vice versa. The tool cannot be used with any Creative Cloud products or Acrobat delivered with CS products. It can only be used for standalone versions of Acrobat and Reader. In some scenarios, the cleaner tool for Windows might affect some preferences common between Acrobat and Reader. Therefore, when both Acrobat and Reader products are installed on machine, Adobe recommends the remaining installed product be repaired after running the cleaner Tool.User interface usageVerify you have run the product uninstaller.
