A regulated low-noise DC output up to 5 W of power.Amber AC Switch is is a digital power management arc-free switch that eliminates the bulky relays and TRIAC dimmers. It is also a dual-throw solid-state line-disturbance circuit interrupter for ground-fault–detecting circuit interrupters and arc-fault circuit interrupters. Infineon’s CoolMOS 7 Superjunction MOSFET technology offers efficiency benefits over the whole load range in static switching applications compared with the previous CoolMOS series. Static switching application of power MOSFETs is where power MOSFETs are switching at low frequency, from a few cycles per minute to the low-kilohertz range. Switching power losses of the MOSFET in these applications are less of a concern, and an emphasis of the electrical characteristic of the MOSFET is placed on low conduction losses and robustness. Going forward, we will be looking at how we can further optimize our MOSFET and silicon carbide performance for this application. This includes reliability, packaging, and cost optimizations for these types of applications.”The S7 family of high-voltage superjunction MOSFETs sets a new benchmark for power density by uniquely fitting a 22-mΩ chip into an innovative small TO-leadless SMD package. It is an ideal fit for applications in which MOSFETs are switched at low frequency, such as active-bridge rectification, inverter stages, in-rush relays, PLCs, power-solid-state relays, and solid-state circuit breakers. Not have the same polished look as the Myst series, especially the scenes outside. The house and interiors look good enough, but the lake and woods look pretty rancid. Nothing showstopping, but the visuals definitely betray the game’s age and budget. However, QuickTime animations do mix in to the static backgrounds mostly seamlessly, breaking up the static screens and helping the situations come alive. You’re limited to a medium-sized 640×480 viewing window, which may bother some, but after a few minutes of play, you hardly even notice. The frame for the view window even has a unique look based on your location, and the ghost whose story you’re following.For an adventure game, Amber is not very difficult, and adventure aficionados should breeze through it in a few hours. The puzzles are simple – not childish, mind you, but so logical that they are immediately grasped and solved. To turn on power, you flip the breaker. To figure out the proper settings for a piece of equipment, you consult its manual. Things get only slightly more abstract in the ghost worlds, only because they function like dreams, and therefore give reality little more than lip service. Still, puzzles are never so convoluted that they won’t be solveable. In fact, the most difficulty I had in Amber was with one sliding block puzzle, which I’m personally not good at to begin with. The only other trouble spot was navigating a lake during a blizzard, as the cursor does not accurately dictate where you will go in this section. Other than that, the game controls like second nature, and the puzzles are engaging, and not ridiculous.As far as adventure games go, and especially Myst clones, Amber is far from revolutionary. Infineon Technologies and Amber have announced a collaboration that will see the commercialization of Amber’s technology on the digital control of electricity in silicon architecture. The main applications are related to Amber’s patented technologies such as AC/DC Enabler and AC Switch for smart circuit breakers, dimmers, and new solutions with Infineon’s suite of products. In an exclusive interview with EEWeb, Thar Casey, CEO of Amber, and Steve Bakos, senior director of switching power at Infineon Technologies, discussed the commercial and technical aspects of this collaboration, which will see a partnership around the digital electricity control market with embedded intelligence.“The goal is to exploit solid-state technology and move beyond electromechanical systems — the bulky electrolytic capacitors, magnetics, transformers, and other passive elements standard today,” said Casey. “Infineon and its CoolMOS power MOSFET technology prove to be up to the task. Our alliance aims to offer a transformation of every electrical endpoint in all residential and commercial buildings to a modern silicon architecture with embedded intelligence. The challenge is that there is no room for these extra components in the extremely small, fixed dimensions of a circuit breaker, light switch, or electrical outlet box. This is where Amber’s Enabler IP enters the picture. It provides a regulated DC supply in a very small and economical footprint without the need for the bulky magnetics or capacitors, making room for as well as providing the DC power for other features like sensors and wireless communication. Achieving the goal of a monolithic IC with the enabler, PSoC, and FETs might be theoretically possible but would just not be practical. But that does not rule out having this solution in a single package. We will be working closely with Amber to leverage our extensive packaging expertise to figure out the best way to partition and package this solution so that it is small but also thermally efficient. The first one will focus on upgrading the power management architecture in specific product categories, such as smart switches, standard dimmer, sockets, and others, with silicon-based solutions from Amber and Infineon. All related applications will benefit from intelligent and dynamic power management in a small form factor. The second objective will explore the integration of some of Amber’s proprietary architectures, with Infineon’s product roadmap to establish opportunities in terms of new solutions for new markets.Both Amber and Infineon foresee many opportunities in this collaboration. Bakos pointed out that Amber’s architecture matches many of Infineon’s power control and computing solution offerings. The replacement of mechanically based components with solid-state technology has Infineon’s full attention. By replacing traditional bulky and expensive magnetic and mechanical components, Amber’s solution reduces costs and space, which is a major factor in switches and electrical boxes.“The mindset of companies in manufacturing products such as switches and sockets has been electromechanical for decades, or rather for over a century,” said Casey. “However, in the last, let’s say, five years, this mentality is changing a little bit. When you have a computer in your hand or a phone, and you can do everything with it, but at the same time you are still using electromechanical technology in your home, like sockets and switches, then something is wrong.
