A company secretary by the day,Ketan Kank (29) undergoes a transformation in the evenings when he turns co-ordinator to 150-odd dhol-tasha players of the troupe he set up last year. Between 5pm and 8pm,Kank,who is also a lawyer,gets down to directing a three-hour practice session for the second Ganesh festival for his troupe,Shiv Vardhan. In his early thirties,Umesh Agashe is HR head at an IT firm. In the evenings,he undergoes a change like Kank. After office hours,he reaches Kothrud where 350-odd volunteers of his troupe,Shaurya,practise dhol-tasha for the next few hours.Kank and Agashe represent a new breed of young professionals who have started their dhol-tasha troupes,traditionally restricted to Ganpati mandals and voluntary organisations. “I founded the Shaurya troupe in December last year with an investment of about Rs 9.5 lakh that largely went into buying 190 dhols and 35 tashas. I used to play in another troupe a few years ago and thought of starting my own to experiment with rhythms,” says Agashe. What began with eight committee members of Shaurya in 2011,swelled to 470 in less than a year. About 300 to 350 people between 22 to 27 years of age regularly show up for practice.“Shaurya is registered as a charitable trust. We have decided to buy grocery for voluntary organisation Manavya to serve HIV-affected children with money that remains after deducting our input costs,” says Agashe who adds he ventured into this field to give the traditonal dhol-tasha troupes a touch of professionalism and expand their scope. While the returns are good,Agashe insists he is not in it for the money.Kank’s Shiv Vardhan troupe does not have the tag of a charitable trust. He is in it for sheer pleasure. “We are new to the field and as of now,it is my responsibility to see the troupe’s expenses like rent for place of practice,transportation,food for volunteers are taken care of,” says Kank who does not play the dhol but concentrates on coordination of the troupe. “An important aspect of our troupe is we have flexible practice timings. Any newcomer with some sense of rhythm can join for practice between 5 pm and 7 pm and we make sure he/she gets a dhol or tasha to play. 7pm to 8pm is when seasoned members practise,” said Kank. Over the past few years,dhol-tasha groups have been mushrooming in Pune,believed to have the largest number of dhol-tasha groups in the country. An unofficial estimate pegs it at 80 this year,from the 60 recorded last year. An important reason attributed to the spurt is that it’s lucrative. The amount is calculated taking into account the route and distance.” While groups charge 60,000 to 70,000 per procession in Pune,the rates increase stratospherically when they travel outside,to Mumbai in particular. Shiv Garjana and Naadbrahma will perform in multiple processions in Mumbai. Thite and Behere agree that the difference in remuneration in the two cities is huge. “Mumbai processions definitely give us a lot more. While rates change with every Mandal,it is safe to say we get twice the amount for a Mumbai procession,” says Thite. An office bearer of a reputed dhol-tasha group says on the condition of anonymity,“In Mumbai we even make Rs 5 to 6 lakh for a five-hour procession.” Group members are not paid as it’s a voluntary activity. Naadbrahma,which will perform in 22 processions throughout the festival,is the biggest dhol-tasha group in the city with 700 on its roll. Atul Behere,who heads it says,“We charge around Rs 60,000 for a two-hour procession but we also take good care of our musicians. We provide them with clean drinking water and good wholesome food during the procession and it is for this we have to charge so much.” Story continues below this adMostmandals provide refreshments and water to the group performing for them. Sanket Mate of Akhil Mandai Ganeshotsav Mandal says,“We always take care of dhol-tasha pathaks (groups) that play for our Ganapati. We regularly offer them refreshments and have even arranged for complete meals at times.”Thite says Shiv Garjana adds cost of refreshments and transportation to the fee. “We need to hire tempos to transport dhols and mandal authorities being busy with other works,we charge them for refreshments,” says Thite.

The buzzing noise that flies make while flying is not a result of the energy expended in flight. Instead, some species of flies use the sound as a warning or communication signal. The sound is produced by the vibration of the two wings of a fly.
