This looks like a great idea at first glance. Would more details in tracking not be more accurate? It depends! What this boils down to is really the difference between tracking/journaling and fertility charting. What is fertility charting? You may think that charting is really just tracking fertility signs and other data and then trying to make sense of it all.Truly accurate fertility charting is a tight integration of observation, tracking, and interpretation systems. Basically, the tracking is not independent of the analysis. They are designed to complement each other. If you are familiar with scientific experiments, it is basically how experimental designs are done. The measurement procedure is tailored to the analysis system to maximize accuracy. In the case of fertility charting, the data collected is specifically designed for accurate interpretation. Adding more details or changing what is collected does not necessarily make it more accurate. In fact, in many cases, it is quite the opposite.Fertility Friend's Charting SystemFertility Friend's tracking is designed to maximize the accuracy of the interpretation. Speculation that couples who are trying to conceive should reduce the frequency of sexual intercourse during the fertile window to increase sperm supply. This is not true for most couples. While couples with known male factor issues should consult their doctor for the best intercourse strategy, couples with normal fertility and no known sperm issues should not reduce the frequency of intercourse in the fertile window. Your probability of conception is increased when you have intercourse multiple times in your fertile window. While it is true that sperm concentrations decrease slightly with increasing intercourse frequency, frequent intercourse is still more likely to result in conception than infrequent intercourse for couples with no male factor fertility issues. Each additional act of intercourse within your fertile window increases your probability of conception for that cycle.Identifying the Fertile Window ProspectivelyFrequent intercourse within a narrow fertile window increases your chances of conception and can ultimately reduce the time it takes to conceive. Identifying your fertile window in advance, however, can be something of a challenge since the only certain indicator of ovulation (your temperature rise) occurs after your fertile window has passed. To find your fertile window in advance, examining your pre-ovulation fertility signs (such as cervical fluid) and cycle statistics (such as when you have ovulated in previous cycles) can be of great benefit. Ovulation prediction kits (OPKs) which detect the surge of LH (luteinizing hormone) that precedes ovulation can also help. The Fertility Analyzer on Fertility Friend will display a Green Light when you enter signs that indicate that you may be entering or in your fertile window.Identifying the Fertile Window RetrospectivelyIdentifying ovulation and your fertile window in retrospect is relatively simple. Once a clear and sustained thermal shift is identified and ovulation is detected on your chart, you can see that yourFertility Friend - How Fertility Charting Works
Gold standard for understanding how to chart for fertility. It even includes ways to understand fertility signals for pregnancy avoidance. It provides example charts and every single tip you would need to become confident at it yourself.Fertility Friend is likewise the gold standard for fertility apps. It follows the principles outlined in the book above, but instead of writing out paper charts, you can track your fertility on your smartphone. Many other fertility apps and even wearable fertility monitors will track your basal body temperature for you. These devices and apps are loved by some but considered less reliable by others. As with everything, it’s about finding the system or tools that work for you, so explore and find out what you like!Other fertility tracking options include:The Ava braceletDaysy fertility trackerOvuSenseTempdropEach of these comes with its own app for tracking. They can range in price from just under $100 to over $300. If budget is a factor, you can easily track for little to no cost by using Fertility Friend or the principles gained in Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF, as it is often abbreviated in the TTC world). How to Optimize Hitting Your Fertile WindowMany women believe that they have to have intercourse every day during their fertile window to maximize chances at conception. However, when you consider that sperm lives for at least a few days, this isn’t actually true. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for months, the thought of daily intercourse isn’t as fun as it sounds either—just ask many in the infertility community. You can relieve some pressure from the situation by understanding your fertility cues. Once you start having fertile cervical mucus, opting for intercourse every other day (or even every two days, if you have a longer fertile window) can be perfectly acceptable. The exceptions would be if you never have fertile mucus and are not quite sure when your fertile window is, or if you know that your partner’s sperm has low motility or he has low sperm count. If he has a low sperm count, you may require fertility treatment, or it might be best just to have intercourse twice, timed as close as possible for one to two days before ovulation. If you have ovulation pain, don’t assume that that means you have officially ovulated. You should wait until you see the thermal shift on your chart to assume that you have ovulated.Until.
