With the upcoming PSP 2.00 Update (now available in Japan, due out sometime in the near future in North America), Sony Computer Entertainment has made some major and much-requested changes to its handheld gaming machine. The biggest addition, by far, is the inclusion of a PSP Web Browser. A close second in importance -- or, at least, so we had originally hoped -- is the inclusion of support for the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding format. Known under its project code name of h.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10), or more simply AVC, this new codec is one step closer to nirvana for video makers. AVC will power the next-generation of high-def DVDs, and a variant of it is also what movie studios use to make UMD Video disc releases. However, as many PSP videophiles have already become well aware of, Sony's video support on the PSP has been anything but next-gen. The company often uses proprietary encoders for its digital video hardware (including digital cameras, camcorders, Vaio laptop DVR applications, video-enabled cellphones, PDAs, etc.), and the PSP has inherited the mobile video standards instead of earning its own format. In layman's terms, we're getting video made to be played on a cellphone for our super-cool PlayStation Portables. As you can guess, this hasn't gone down too well with some PSP owners. You can't just make movies in QuickTime and drop them into the PSP. You have to use this special format. Worse than that, Sony hasn't made that pill any easier to swallow -- there was not a video encoding program included with the PSP, and the program that Sony is instead selling for making home PSP videos, called Image Converter 2, has been a tremendous disappointment. Are things about to change now that SCE has introduced support for the new AVC codec in the latest update of PSP? Not quite. You still can't use QuickTime or Media Cleaner or any other standard encoder to make AVC videos, and there's still no folder support for PSP videos.
