In this book, students have to count the hats in the ten frames and then velcro the number piece onto the correct page.Similarly, in the April Earth Day Adapted Book, students practice their ten frames. This is a Counting Adapted Book where students practice their counting skills. Each page has the question “How many fish?” Students then have to count the colorful fish on the page and velcro the correct number onto the page. Each interactive piece has a number on it, and the number is getting eaten by a shark. The students will LOVE this fun detail to the book!Using Adapted Books in the Classroom Moreover, adapted books are a great way to keep your classroom inclusive because it allows students to practice how to interact with books in a meaningful way while also practicing other skills they might need to work on, such as counting, color or shape knowledge or matching. One of the common questions I get as an agent relates to how long a book should be. Many aspiring authors think about a target number of pages and chapters when they need to focus on word count.Using pages as a metric for book length likely comes from those who self-publish and are accustomed to being charged per page for their book.Depending on the type of project, there is an optimum word count that affects the length of a project. There are some variations; but generally, they all fall into a range that gives authors an idea of how to proceed.There are some dramatic exceptions to whatever general guidelines exist.A generation ago, chapter books for grade schoolers were generally about 20,000 words and put into formats with larger print and paperback covers. Then along came Harry Potter, and the assumptions about what a ten-year-old would read went out the window. Harry Potter books started at 76,000 words for the first in the series, and another was over a quarter million words.I have seen proposed projects that are significantly too long, like the 800,000-word memoir that could only be published as a set of books costing $300 to replace where you used to store a Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedia set on the bookshelf. Maybe there could be a payment plan to get a new volume monthly for twelve months?I’ve also seen “books” that are too short, like the insightful 1,200-word info-piece that should be a free download PDF or a booklet given out on the street corner.Neither of these examples is commercially viable. The first is too expensive to publish, and the second would not command a selling price that would make it worthwhile. I (@southernsurroundings) think there is one last room of our new house I haven't shown you-the office! We had our cabinet maker build a great desk with built-ins for it. We had them painted in the same dark grey of our laundry room (Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore). We also used the same natural color butcher block for the desk top as the laundry room.This piece itself transformed the whole office. I knew it would be a great place to store books but I was a little stumped as to what to do with the rest of the shelves. After a trip to Old Time Pottery, I had a plan in mind!I knew we need a piece of artwork for the blank wall above the monitor. I loved this neutral forest print with the gold frame from Old Time Pottery. It fits the space perfectly and the gold pops with the grey.Old Time Pottery has so many baskets to choose from. I love how their natural color goes with the butcher block and really stands out against the dark shelves. Bonus-you can hide things in them you might now want to see.Every shelf and needs a little greenery to give it some life. I found so many cute faux plants there.Now onto accessories!My next stop was the pottery aisle. These wood tone and white vases really stand out here. Old Time Pottery has beautiful pottery. It was easy to choose different colors and sizes. The gold sphere and globe compliment the gold picture frame. As with any other circumstances, it is important to evaluate the reputability of an auctioning website, as some are more reliable than others. Patience is KeyCompared to many other sectors of the collectibles market, comic collecting is still relatively niche, so one must consider that although an item may technically be worth a certain amount of money, it is not always guaranteed that there is someone out there looking for and thus willing to pay top dollar for it. Sellers need to be realistic in considering that if they are looking for a quick sale, it may be necessary to lower the price by some. Otherwise one might have to wait quite a while before a potential buyer emerges looking for the specific item, although this can sometimes be worth it. Additionally, it is best to set up a consignment rather than sell to a comic book store, as they need to make a profit and thus will not pay full price for your comic.Comic books are a nostalgic piece of media history and can provide a glimpse into the fantasies of a time past. Not very many people realize they can also be worth a great deal of money as well. Who knows - you could very well have a gem hiding in your collection. Reading provides you with an opportunity to get into the best minds that are now or that have ever been in the world. Covey recommends starting with a goal of a book a month then a book every two weeks, then a book a week.One of the best ways to develop children’s reading skills is to encourage consistent reading. Nightly reading is a great habit to form from a very young age. Try to get younger children to make reading a part of their daily schedule even if it is only a few minutes a day. If they develop this habit when they are young they are more likely to continue reading when they are older.If you are using the reading logs in the classroom then you can get a large piece of construction paper and adhere each student’s log or put them on a bulletin board. This will help students read more since there will be healthy competition once everyone’s log is visible.Remember what you readWhen you keep track of the books, you read, you will remember what you read. I can’t tell you how many times I have started to read a book only to discover I had actually read it. My memory, unfortunately, isn’t what it used to be. Keep all old logs in a binder to have records of books read over time.Remember if you enjoyed the bookYou can add a rating system and rate each book from 1 to 5. This will help you when someone asks if you recommend a specific book. It will also probably increase the chance that you remember what you read.Understand your reading habitsWhen you track your reading habits over time you will notice how they evolve. Often, we don’t realize that most of the books we read are similar and we can broaden our horizons.Recognize your achievementReading many books is an achievement that you deserve to recognize. When your book log is long and you don’t keep a record of the books you read, you will not be able to create the list years from now.If you want to give kids motivation to read then you can give them a prize when they complete their book log.Encourage comprehension and reflectionIf you use our book review template and write a few sentences about each book, it will force you to think about the book and what it meant to you.
