One of the pads that proves this inconsistency is Gravis' entry into the low end market with the GamePad Pro. It's a simple little pad with bright colors that may look a little fruity when you check it out in the store, but don't let that fool you, it's a good pad for the $19.99 you'll need to shell out for it.After playing with the pad in several different types of games, it is definitely better for certain types of games than others even though it works for any game that supports a pad. For sports games like NHL 2001 and racing games like the upcoming Midtown Madness 2 and the beautiful NFS Porsche Unleashed, the controller provides all of the control that you could want or need. Midtown Madness 2, which just went gold today, was really a dream to play with the GamePad Pro. It offered up great control for tight turns and fast play and I never once found myself wanting to blame the controller for my screw-ups.It doesn't control as well in games such as StarLancer however. The gamepad doesn't come with an analog joystick making the flight sims and 3D platform games a little more difficult, but that is one of the prices you pay for having to pay less of a price. You can however screw in a little handle to the D-pad to make a little joystick for those of you that prefer the feel of a stick. It doesn't really make a difference to how the controller handles however and really just kinda got in the way in the racing and sports games.The pad looks and acts almost exactly like the original PlayStation controller, which if you play any console games will clue you in on the functional design. The four main buttons are nice and big and are easy to hit even if they are a little gaudy. They are spaced far enough apart that you won't be hitting more than one button unless you mean to or you have a swollen thumb. The four top buttons (two on each side) are also sized and placed nicely. The buttons also are also perfectly tuned to give just the right amount of responsiveness. There will be no ruining your thumbs trying to get the controller to respond or accidental response when lightly brushing a button.The d-pad is very responsive giving tight control and immediate response to your commands.
