Celebrating The Journey: Keith Bynum Birthday And Beyond
The stars of HGTV's "Bargain Block" are taking their expertise in home improvement down to The Big Easy, which they say has come along with some unexpected health benefits. Construction and design connoisseurs Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas have been working in New Orleans, Louisiana on their spin-off show "Bargain Block New Orleans," which is a world of difference from their usual location of Detroit, Michigan, where they film their flagship series.AdvertisementBynum took to Instagram to share that he and Thomas had been on a health kick during their stay down south, and the effects are totally noticeable. According to HGTV, the couple's spin-off will be their biggest creative feat as they get used to NOLA's unique architecture and a highly competitive real estate market. The home improvement channel posted the announcement on Instagram, saying that Bynum and Thomas will be "dancing in a Mardi Gras parade and enjoying a crawfish boil, along with other vibrant local experiences!" With all that activity in such a lively city, it's no wonder the two have succeeded thus far in their weight loss journey. And check out their impressive before and after pictures! The thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Bynum and Thomas said the series, which aims to help Detroit communities, wound up helping them through their pandemic stress by allowing them to focus on something positive.Several years before the show debuted, the pair relocated from Colorado to Michigan with a goal of rehabbing houses in unique ways. As Bynum explained to the Free Press during the inaugural season, “The move actually had nothing to do with the show. We moved here in 2017 from Denver, and we started our first two houses in the northwest part of Detroit.”Hailing originally from Texas, Bynum is the design guru with the envelope-pushing decorating ideas. Thomas, who has a doctorate in physics, is the whiz at carpentry. Their skill sets complement each other. So does their willingness to take creative leaps.“People sometimes say Keith is the balloon and I’m the string," Thomas said in 2021. "Keith is this very creative guy who could float off into the cosmos at any moment. I’m kind of like the string that keeps him tethered to reality. I feel like my role in the show and in our business is letting him do all his creative things and then I’ll chime in when I think it’s getting a little too out there or unrealistic.”After HGTV approached them about a series, Bynum and Thomas made a pilot for “Bargain Block” in 2019. They shot the rest of the series in 2020, with Hicks-Whitfield coming on board that first season to lend her expertise on the Detroit real estate marketplace.Season four of HGTV's "Bargain Block" returns September 4, 2024 with Evan Thomas, Keith Bynum and Shea Hicks-Whitfield.Last year, Thomas spoke about the show’s growth over time. "We have a lot more help now than we used to. … I think you’ll see designs that are better, houses that are overall better and more impressive, and I think that’s due to our company growing and maturing over the years as we get better and better at what we do," he said. But the winning formula has stayed the same. Bynum’s constant enthusiasm for fun, unexpected ideas and Thomas’ level-headed persistence don’t just turn crumbling homes into something special. Their combined approach makes for great television — and their candor about facing the same bumps in the road as any home-rehabber is reassuring. As Bynum noted last season, sometimes even deciding where toKeith Bynum on Instagram: Happy Birthday to the cutest cowboy
Of painstaking work, they found her. Asked how she wants people to remember Kelli Cox, Cox's daughter Alexis Bynum, pictured with her grandmother Jan, said, "Just the way she was. … She was a beautiful young woman who had a lot going for her." CBS News Alexis Bynum: I had nightmares for the first time — where she had to wake me up, screaming. That never — never had nightmares like that before.Jan Bynum: Yeah. I mean, her nightmares were being down in a hole.Alexis Bynum: It was just — (emotional). After Kelli and Jessica were found, Oklahoma County prosecutors Jimmy Harmon and Ryan Stephenson had William Reece transported back to their state to face a capital murder trial for Tiffany Johnston.Jimmy Harmon: We typically only seek the death penalty on the worst of the worst murderers and Mr. Reece certainly fit that bill.Reece pleaded not guilty — even though prosecutors had the DNA evidence and his chilling words from his taped confession. WILLIAM REECE (to Ranger Holland): That's when I grabbed her around the throat and her. When the trial began in May 2021, Reece's defense fought to keep that video out. But the judge decided the jury would watch it and all the statements where Reece admitted killing Laura Smither, Kelli Cox and Jessica Cain. All relevant, says Stephenson, for showing that Reece had a pattern. Ryan Stephenson: All of that being in such a short time period … we wanted to be able to show the jury that this guy wasn't stopping, he — he was stopped.Sandra Sapaugh and two women who say Reece sexually assaulted them in 1997 all testified at the trial. Prosecutors say this testimony was crucial to correcting the self-serving stories Reece told on those tapes.Ryan Stephenson: You … never quite get the full story out of William Reece. He always tells it in a way that makes him look best.Prosecutors think the true story is Reece would set traps for his victims.Jimmy Harmon: He would sometimes create the situation, in the case of Sandra Sapaugh, by slashing her tire … and … presented himself. As Wednesday’s season premiere of “Bargain Block” begins, Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas are visiting two new houses for their HGTV home renovation series set in Detroit. And these are not just any houses. Located side by side, the matching homes cost $6,500 each. Both have 1,050 square feet of space and identical floor plans. Some might look at them and see only crumbling porches and dilapidated interiors. But in Bynum’s vision, these are future enchanted cottages. As the duo explores what needs to be fixed, they spot one immediate problem: the round-top front doorway, which will be a difficult match for replacement doors. But that shape must be preserved. As Bynum says in an exclusive clip for the Free Press, the front doorway is “very fairy-tale looking, like a cottage in the forest with a crazy witch inside.”“Bargain Block” isn’t just another home restoration show. It’s an adventure of imagination and overcoming obstacles that Bynum and Thomas, who are life and professional partners, have built into a popular HGTV series. The show, which drew nearly 18 million viewers last season, has built a dedicated audience through its mission of finding “diamonds in the rough,” as it calls them, and turning them into stylishly furnished starter homes. The fan base stretches far beyond the Motor City locations where the action unfolds."Bargain Block" hosts Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas in the finished living room of the fairy-tale themed house featured in the season four opener of the HGTV hit.For the fourth season, Bynum and Thomas, along with local real estate expert Shea Hicks-Whitfield, will kick things off the Brothers Grimm-esque makeover that erases the grim aspects of the twin homes. As they redo the houses with the magical mood of fairy tales in mind, their projects will include creating a roomy master suite and customizing a guest bathroom with a gold-patterned wall.Future episodes will feature a rainforest theme that is sparked by the plants and mushrooms they discover growing inside an abandoned property, plus homes with casino and Mexico-inspired touches. The biggest renovation innovation that lies ahead? This season, Bynum and Thomas will weigh expanding the “Bargain Block” concept to another locale, New Orleans, which faces similar challenges to Detroit in terms of rehabbing houses with hidden potential.According to HGTV, they will be traveling to the Big Easy and putting a bid on a possible residence there. The first season of “Bargain Block” launched in 2021 inCelebrating Keith Bynum's Birthday: A Journey Through His Life
“It’s not easy, but it’s what we do.” That’s Evan Thomas, speaking about the vision he shares with his life and business partner Keith Bynum to convert Detroit one block at a time. In Episode 3 of Season 2, the couple finds a pleasant block in Northwest Detroit with just two houses in need of rehabbing. The couple buys the first, a 1,200-square-foot, three-bedroom, one-bath bungalow for $25K. Sounds like a steal, until you consider the buckling living room floors and crumbling front wall, the result of water damage caused by a hole in the roof. But Bynum is ever the optimist. “The house has a lot of charm, and I want to try to preserve as much of that as possible,” he says. Built in 1951, Bynum names this one the "'50s House" and Thomas sets a reno budget of $70K. As usual, the potential profit margin is slim. But Thomas and Bynum aren’t in it for the money. That much we know. Bynum envisions this house as “modern with a feel of nostalgic elements,” but he doesn’t want it to reach “kitschy cute.” He plans on incorporating lots of velvet, including a green sofa and an original art piece in navy blue and gray. The couple has barely started work on the house when they’re approached by the owner of the house next door — the only other house in need of repair on the block. The owner had started the work on the house himself, but now he’s ready to get out from under it. He offers to sell Bynum and Thomas the house for $40K, and they accept. And just like that, they have their next project lined up. Working on two homes next to each other at once allows the pair to maximize efficiency. The new bungalow, like the first, has three bedrooms and one bath and is 1,200 square feet. But it’s laid out differently, and somehow the rooms feel oversized. Bynum dubs this one the "Chunky House" and explains that it will be a “concept house of epic proportions, avante garde with experimentalHeavy on HGTV - Keith Bynum wishes Shea a happy birthday!

Most police departments would have just turned her picture into the Missing Persons Clearinghouse and been done with it." … that was heartbreaking.Jan was certain that someone had abducted Kelli but was at a loss. Police had no body and no strong leads, and the case soon grew cold. 2025-04-14Bargain Block stars Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas aren't ones to shy away from a challenge. After all, they've made a business of renovating homes in desperate need of repair and sharing their progress with viewers on HGTV. The duo also tapped into their competitive drive with a turn on Rock the Block. Now, they've taken a step out of their comfort zone to try their hands at renovating homes in Louisiana. The result? Bargain Block New Orleans, a five-episode spinoff that gives fans a peek into real estate in the storied city. Why New Orleans? Keith explains, "I am originally from the South. I'm from Texas and I have been wanting to reconnect to the south for a long time, and New Orleans is a very creative place. It has a lot of similarities to Detroit in the real estate market, and it's just a beautiful city with a lot of inspiration. So it kind of made sense to us to kind of take a chance and see if we could make something work down there." Courtesy of HGTV"We were also looking for a way that we could sort of snowbird our business," Keith continues. "And that was the perfect way for us to work on houses in good weather at all times. Construction really slams to a stop in Michigan in the winter."But this is a temporary relocation for the couple. Keith says, "We're back up in Detroit, finishing more houses up there now. We plan to do more in New Orleans. This was just the initial round, and it was the perfect way to figure out what we want to do going forward. Now we better understand the market and the neighborhoods and the costs and so we're poised to do better on the next round."While Keith and Evan found a lot of similarities to their experience in Detroit, there were some major differences too. Keith explains, "The biggest surprise for us was how different the foundations are down in NOLA compared to Detroit. In Detroit, you have very solid ground. It's not really shifting much throughout the years. Whereas in NOLA, the ground is actively sinking, and it's been sinking for like 100 years or more. And so you have houses that were built on shifting sands and now every foundation is basically wonked and ruined." This was a learning curve for Keith and Evan, and it resulted in much higher costs too. Courtesy of HGTVKeith and Evan on Rock the BockKeith shares, "The design world there is so different for me too. The inspirational elements are almost endless. I am so excited to be able to pull in different French elements and Spanish elements. There's been so many things that have been inspirational for these houses, and we've tied a lot of those details in with the fleur-de-lis and stained glass and all of the things that just bring New Orleans home."But Keith and Evan weren't just busy with their renovations—New Orleans filled up their
