As winter approaches, travelers planning to use Washington State Ferries (WSF) can now secure their vehicle reservations for the upcoming season. Starting Tuesday, reservations are available for the Anacortes/San Juan Islands and Port Townsend/Coupeville routes, ensuring a smoother travel experience during the colder months.In an interview with KIRO Newsradio, WSF spokesperson Justin Fujioka emphasized the importance of making reservations.“We highly recommend that people travel with a vehicle reservation,” Fujioka explained. “It’s not a ticket, but it saves your space on these routes ahead of time.”He noted that while reservations generally guarantee a spot, unforeseen circumstances such as weather, crew shortages or vessel issues can still cause disruptions.MyNorthwest News: The CEO works remotely, but Starbucks employees need to be in the office 3 days a week come JanuaryThe reservation system, in place for about a decade, helps manage the flow of vehicles and reduces the likelihood of long wait times at terminals.“We prioritize those reservation holders on a first-come, first-served basis, ahead of anybody waiting in standby,” Fujioka said.This system is particularly crucial during the winter when weather-related cancellations are more common.Fujioka also highlighted the differences in travel patterns between seasons.“In the summertime, we tend to have more delays due to higher traffic volumes,” he said. “Winter typically sees fewer delays, but cancellations can happen any time of the year.”Despite these challenges, the reservation system aims to provide a more predictable travel experience.For those wondering about the cost, Fujioka clarified that vehicle reservations are free.“They don’t cost anything,” he said. “The only fee is a no-show fee if you don’t show up for your reservation.”This fee varies depending on the route and fare but is generally around $10.Chokepoints: WSDOT is prepared for winter. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed to KIRO Newsradio Monday that 38% of the vessels in the Washington State Ferries (WSF) fleet are out of service for various reasons.WSF Communications Consultant Brian Vail explained to KIRO Newsradio Monday that the Yakima ferry, which services Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, has been out of service since Saturday with electrical issues. The vessel maintenance staff and contractors are continuing to work on it, Vail added.Vail told KIRO Newsradio that with the Yakima out of service until its work is completed, eight ships — or nearly 40% — are on the sidelines at this time.“So that means eight of our 21 vessels are out for service right now,” Vail said. “So we’re down to 13 operating vessels this week.”The Seattle-Bainbridge route will drop to one ferry Tuesday for some vessel maintenance on the Issaquah.“They’re hoping it’ll just be a one-day project. We’ll know more once they … get under the boat and figure out exactly what they’re looking at,” Vail said to KIRO Newsradio.The agency hopes two-boat service can be restored to that route by Wednesday.Other vessel issuesThe Seattle-Bremerton and Edmonds-Kingston routes already are down to one boat each.The agency has 10 routes that run regularly, and Vail reiterated just 13 vessels are running currently. LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — KATV is pleased to announce that Barry Brandt has been selected as its new chief meteorologist. Brandt will lead central Arkansas' most experienced weather team, providing forecasts for the station’s 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts. Barry Brandt is the single most-experienced meteorologist on the Arkansas airwaves, having covered the natural state for more than three decades."I'm honored to have been chosen to lead such a great team of meteorologists," said Brandt. "Arkansas has been my home for more than thirty years now, and in that time I've developed a deep love for our state and its people, as well as a unique understanding of Arkansas weather patterns an understanding shared by the rest of the Channel 7 Weather team, all native Arkansans delivering the most accurate weather forecasts each and every day. I truly believe that our team of meteorologists are unmatched in this market, or anywhere in the country."KATV News Director Nick Genty commented, "I'm excited to name Barry as KATV’s chief. Barry has shown his passion and commitment to alert and protect Arkansans for more than 30 years.
