(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)APBy Matt Vautour | [email protected]. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt pulled out of UMass’ coaching search but the job might not be vacant much longer.Former South Carolina coach Frank Martin has moved to the front of the line. UMass sources confirmed and expanded on a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Martin is expected to meet with UMass A.D. Ryan Bamford Thursday potentially to finalize a deal. Thamel tweeted:“Source: Former South Carolina coach Frank Martin has emerged as the target of the UMass basketball search. Martin met with UMass officials Tuesday and the sides are expected to meet again in person on Thursday.”Martin was fired at South Carolina earlier this month after leading the Gamecocks to the 2017 Final Four. But he was just five games over .500 in the years that followed.Martin was previously the head coach at Kansas State and has a career record of 288-201. UMass BasketballMatt McCall says transfer-loaded UMass men’s basketball team has NCAA Tournament aspirationsUMass Mullins Center 3/7/20. UMass Head Coach Matt McCall, keeps a close eye on the action on the floor from the bench in the 1st half.photo by J. Anthony RobeertsBy Matt Vautour | [email protected] McCall isn’t playing coy.The UMass men’s basketball coach thinks his team is capable of being an NCAA Tournament team and he’s challenging them to reach that bar.“The goal for any coach in the Atlantic 10 is to have an opportunity to play in the postseason and have an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament. The goal is no different for us,” McCall said. “That’s what we’re trying to achieve. It hasn’t been done here for a long time. Our players are hungry for that. ... We’re excited for the opportunity. Our expectations are like everybody else’s. What are we going to do to improve each day and ultimately we want to be playing in that postseason come March.”The Minutemen were picked ninth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll and didn’t have anyone on the three preseason (six-member) all-conference teams, an indication that McCall’s optimism for his team stretches beyond what the rest of the league expects from it.“That’s going to be decided in between the lines. I’ve been on teams that have not been picked at the top that finished at the top,” he said. “I’ve been on teams that have been picked at the top and finished at the top. We don’t get wrapped up in it.”Realistically it’s hard to know what to expect from UMass. The Minutemen went 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic 10 in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, but three starters transferred, including their top two scorers. Tre Mitchell is the most notable loss, taking his 18.8 points and 7.2 rebounds to Texas. Carl Pierre moved on to Rice and Ronnie DeGray is at Missouri.Point guard Noah Fernandes is a leader and the team’s top returning scorer at 11.1 points to go with 4.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. T.J. Weeks, who averaged 14.7 points and shot 48.5 percent from 3-point range before being injured as a freshman, is now almost two years clear of that injury. He’ll have a chance to be a prominent piece.Like much of college basketball, the new transfer rules created a lot of comings and goings in Amherst. Eight of the 14 players on the Minutemen began their collegiate careers elsewhere. The Minutemen have added five transfers that figure to play key roles for UMass this season:Rich Kelly — The much-traveled guard was a star at Quinnipiac and played well for Boston College in 2020-21, where he was third in scoring andWomen's Basketball - UMass Dartmouth
