On Oct.14, the craft launched to Jupiter's moon Europa, a world planetary scientists suspect harbors an ocean twice the volume of Earth's. With around 50 close swoops by Europa, NASA will be able to confidently answer the question of whether this ocean realm also hosts the ingredients, such as an energy source and telltale materials, to support life. Yet the radiation environs there are particularly harsh. "The charged particle environment at Europa's location is immense," Cynthia Phillips, a NASA planetary geologist and project staff scientist for the space agency's Europa Clipper mission, told Mashable.Jupiter, a gas giant planet 317 times more massive than Earth, generates a magnetic field shooting out between 600,000 to 2 million miles (1 to 3 million kilometers) towards the sun. It's created by the planet's liquid metal core, which spins and creates electrical currents (moving electric charges make magnetic fields). Crucially, this magnetic field grabs and then accelerates particles from the relentless solar wind — a stream of rapidly traveling charged particles emitted by the sun — which creates potent radiation belts around Jupiter. "It bombards everything." Any craft traveling around the planet will almost certainly pass through these hazardous zones and expose instruments to harmful particles, which can damage computer chips and electronics. The mission is designed to test solar sail technology to help NASA develop larger spacecraft in the future using this next-generation propulsion system. Solar sails work similarly to nautical sails, but instead of being pushed by wind, they are impacted by the pressure of sunlight as photons bounce off of the reflective material they're made from.On Aug. 29, the ACS3 spacecraft deployed its 860-square-foot (80-square-meter) solar sail while operating at an altitude about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) above Earth, which is nearly twice as high as the International Space Station. As the ACS3 spacecraft orbits Earth, it's large surface area means it reflects enough sunlight to be seen from the ground. Under some conditions, the solar sail demonstrator could even appear as bright as Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. If you want to see it for yourself, you're in luck: NASA has an app that lets you track sighting opportunities from your location.To most easily see NASA's ACS3 solar sail, you'll want to download the official NASA app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.From there, navigate to the "Featured" tab at the bottom of the app. You should see a section for the Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) under "Featured missions."Once you tap on that mission, you'll be able to then tap on "Sightings." Gouliermis (Universität Heidelberg), et al The Hubble Telescope, which launched more than 30 years ago in 1990, just imaged a curious massive bubble in a nebula 170,000 light years away from Earth. The bubble sits in nebula N44, a seriously elaborate 1,000 light year wide nebula filled with stars of all ages and size, clouds of hydrogen gas, and at the center, this massive bubble. The “superbubble,” as NASA calls it, is 250 light years wide, and scientists are not quite sure exactly why it exists. The dark expanse dotted with stars inside this nebula is a bit of a mystery, although at least one theory for this gaping center exists. One posits that massive stars inside the bubble produce stellar winds that may have blown surrounding gas away, creating the blob. Not everything about this theory quite makes sense, though, because the wind velocities measured within the bubble don’t seem strong enough to do this. Another, more compelling theory states that the bubble was likely created in multiple chain reaction star forming events, as the stars within it have massive age gaps compared to those on the rim of the bubble. The nebula glows from the cooling of the ionized gas that fills it, dropping from a high energy state to a low energy state. Regardless of its origins, the bubble is as entrancing as ever.
