Connecting old machines to the internet: dispelling the
Tested connection on multiple devices(phone, tablets, laptops) and they all have internet connection connected through wifi. It's not a major issue in my eyes, as I know I can just manually update the firmware when I want. I was just worried because when I first purchases the router, I never encountered this error. After setting up your Internet connection, go to the Router Upgrade screen to check for updated firmware."Also, if I can hijack my own thread, I've noticed that my old SSID is still broadcasting even though I've switched to a new one. You are here: Home / Computer Tips / Is an outdated modem throttling your Internet connection?Comcast, Time Warner and other cable Internet providers periodically raise the guaranteed download and upload speeds for their various Internet service tiers in order to remain competitive in the marketplace. And when they do, they usually email their customers to let them know they’ve received a bump in their connection speeds. When necessary, they’ll also let the customers know that they’ll need to order a new updated modem in order to actually take advantage of the faster data transmission speeds provided by their plan. The problem is, many customers either don’t receive the notification emails about the needed modem upgrades or the emails get lost in their junk folder. As a result, those customers often continue using their old, outdated modems because they don’t know they’re supposed to request a new one. That’s a serious problem because that old, outdated modem will often throttle their Internet connection down to a speed that’s often a lot slower than the speed they should rightfully be enjoying. And in case you’re wondering, the speed lost due to an outdated modem can be quite substantial. For example, just a few years ago my own Comcast Internet plan was upgraded from 45Mbps to 75Mbps. After receiving notification of the speed increase and the need to request a new modem, I called Comcast and requested the modem exchange. While I was waiting for my new modem to arrive, I clicked over to Speedtest.net and ran their speed tests Monthly, this gives you a window of up to a month to get your new connection set up without having to pay another bill from your old provider. Most ISPs try to make setup and installation as quick and easy as possible. If you’re getting a professional installation, make sure you plan ahead, as it can often take a week or two to get a technician to your house. If you’re planning to install your new internet yourself, it can often go much quicker, though you might have to wait for your equipment to be shipped to your house. Step 5: Tell your old provider goodbyeOnce your new internet connection is up and running, it’s time to break up with your old ISP for good. When you call the provider to cancel your service, customer service reps will often pressure you to stay and offer discounts or perks if you do.Of course, if your new service is already up and running, these offers aren’t very persuasive. Plus, if you’ve already called customer service, you’ve probably heard all these offers before, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on some incredible deal. So, there you have it—breaking up with your internet provider can be that easy. Now you can finally get the online experience you’ve always wanted. Ready to switch to a better internet provider in your area?Enter your zip code below. This guide explains how you can share WiFi in Windows 8.1 and turn your Windows computer into a WiFi hotspot. Author Recent Posts Michael Pietroforte is the founder and editor in chief of 4sysops. He has more than 35 years of experience in IT management and system administration. Sharing WiFi in previous Windows versions was quite complicated. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft added a new feature that allows you to share WiFi through a mobile broadband Internet connection. For some reason, this doesn’t work for Internet connections other than mobile modems, such as LAN connections or tethered mobile phones. The procedure described below works for integrated mobile Internet modems and USB modems.Press WIN-key + C to open the Charms menu, and then click the Settings charm. In the Settings menu, click Change PC Settings. In the PC Settings menu, click Network. In the Network menu, you should see the mobile broadband modem. A single click opens the settings for the mobile broadband. In the mobile broadband settings, simply click Share this connection. Note that if your modem is disconnected from the Internet, Windows will establish the connection.Once your mobile device is connected to the Internet, you should see the network name and the network password of your shared WiFi connection. The network name should appear in the list of WiFi networks on the device through which you want connect to the Internet. Don’t confuse it with the access point name. You can change the network name and the network password by clicking Edit.As mentioned above, you can only share mobile networks with this method. If you click a LAN connection, the “Share this connection” will be missing. The same applies to a mobile Internet connection that you tethered through your phone. Windows 8.1 treats tethered connections like LAN connections. However, a mobile modem connected through a USB port works fine.“Share this connection” is missing on tethered connectionYou can still share Internet through WiFi with any type of Internet connection, by way of the old method, using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Note that this method is much more complicated and prone to error than the method described in this post.Connecting old Imac to internet - Apple Community
