--> Some might say that 3 years is too long to wait for an Eastern bred MMORPG to come to the West. In the case of Blade & Soul, it seems like the long detour to an English client has only created more pent up demand for the Wuxia-themed game from NCSOFT and Team Bloodlust. And we’re happy to announce that Blade and Soul is indeed launching in the US and EU this winter, with a closed beta to begin this fall. The wait, as it were, is almost over. It’s been so long since we heard from Blade & Soul that people might not realize it’s gained 10s of millions of players across South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan since its initial launch in mid-2012. When I sat down with Omeed Dariani (Community Director), Ben Conrad (Head of PR), Julianne Harty (Brand Manager), and Producer Nico Courant, it was obvious that everyone at NCSOFT West feels know is the time to bring B&S stateside. Why? Simply put, they had a lot of localization to do and they wanted to do it right. When the game launches this winter, it’ll be in English, French, and German simultaneously with complete voiceover for all of the game’s many cut scenes and quests.Additionally, with a game based on Wuxia mythology, it may have seemed like an easier sell to Eastern audiences first and foremost. With the title’s success in those territories, it really was just a matter of time before we got our own version. As we reported last week, the game is indeed in Friends & Family alpha testing internally, with the closed beta coming this fall and an official launch in the winter. It’s apparent that NC West has long been secretly plugging away at this one, as the client we were shown was really well localized, albeit with placeholder voice over and some placeholder text.A Force Master, wielding fire and ice.We managed to grab about an hour’s worth of hands-on time with the game at the recent event in Santa Monica, and you can find our impressions on that time spent playing elsewhere on the site. For those wondering just what Wuxia is, think of the best known example: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Wuxia literally translates to “Martial Hero”, and Blade & Soul’s focus is on crafting a world of martial arts fantasy where traditional martial arts combat blends with magic, flight, and insane monsters and landscapes. B&S is first and foremost a theme park MMORPG. The best analog you could compare it to is En Masse’s TERA. Both games run on Unreal Engine 3, which gives each some of the most impressive MMO visual fidelity out there. Even 3 years on, Blade & Soul is a gorgeous looking game. While we’ve yet to see how free players are to make their heroes their own, to carve their own path outside of the main storyline, fans of theme park MMOs looking for a fresh take on combat will likely find a

Upcoming Wuxia-inspired open-world RPG adventure title Where Winds Meet is getting a North American closed beta this month. Where Winds Meet is an open world fantasy adventure with deep inspirations from Chinese history and legends and the Wuxia martial arts style. One of the standout features is the beautiful visuals of the game, and Wuxia is acrobatic and graceful.Yet, it’s a martial art and is also strategic. This promising game could make some martial arts gaming fantasies come to life. In a press release announcing the beta, the team notes that some styles under the umbrella, like Tai Chi, work by using techniques to redirect your enemy’s force in order to defeat them in a softer way. This is not the only move you'll have a chance to learn, and the overall skills you learn will give you options in different environments..In another example, you can use the force of a waterfall to break through a wall. Other things you might do is to gather leaves from the ground to unleash power and find other opportunities to use your enemy's force against them or to take advantage by finding a way to use their weapons against them. Maybe your enemy is overshooting or moving forcefully in one direction, that might be your opening. Learn different weapons in your progression to master Chinese martial arts in Wuxia combat. Weapons will include longswords, a broadsword, spears, bows, and even fans.Since this is an adventure RPG with an open world, you'll get to explore, using your skills to make it through the world. There will be other things to discover and to do, including minigames, playing Chinese chess, learning and to play traditional musical instruments, and other content outside of combat. Developer Everstone Studio announced the new test, which is the first major

After teasing a big announcement, the AAA open-world MMORPG from Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios has been revealed. “Code: To Jin Yong (as indicated on the official site)” will adapt the wuxia novels of bestselling Chinese author Jin Yong, and will be built in Unreal Engine 5. No platforms were revealed. The official game description from the site (as translated via Google Translate) says:"Code: To Jin Yong was developed by Tencent Photonics Studio group using Unreal Engine 5, adapted from Mr. Jin Yong’s series of martial arts novels, authorized by Minghe Society and invites you to experience the free and grand martial arts of Jin Yong."Jin Yong’s novels focus on wuxia, and the full trailer (following last week’s brief teaser) shows off some of the gameplay and acrobatic movement we can expect from the game. Jin Yong’s novels are best sellers and have veen translated into various other languages, so there is already some audience in the world familiar with the source material. While many Westerners might think of wuxia from movies, there is something to be considered from making a big, open world full scale MMORPG with this as the basis.Given the legacy of the novels, it seems like there will be plenty of story potential as well. Though not much is known yet about the game, and there are few details in English. Yet this is the first big MMORPG from Lightspeed Studios, which has successfully developed PUBG Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile, among other titles and claims hundreds of millions of active monthly users across games in its portfolio.Given that Tencent is one of the world’s biggest gaming companies, pushing a big AAA open-world MMORPG with the budget this looks to have and graphics might cement wuxia in the games world more broadly too.You can visit the official site for To Jin Yong for more info as it comes out.

For decades, serious film snobs looked down on kung fu movies as cultural trash, a kind of mindless detritus imported from the Pacific Rim to clutter grindhouse movie theaters and fill out the programming line-up on late night TV. This was an odd position to take—if ever there was a genre that embodied the highest ideals of pure cinema, the inimitable marriage of form, movement and sound that can only be found in film, kung fu movies are it. It’s a cinema style madly in love with the human form, with complex and athletic physical performance. In a way, it replaced the Hollywood musical in the West by switching dance numbers and songs with painstakingly constructed exchanges of blows and blood, all inspired by a Chinese martial tradition going back over a thousand years. It’s hard to say exactly why or how Chinese martial arts films made the transition from strict wuxia—or “martial hero” and swordsman–stories to the brand of movie making that plays up fisticuffs and bare-handed combat, often practiced by virtual nobodies in the social order. Bruce Lee was probably most responsible for popularizing the form, though Five Fingers of Death (a title included on this list) typically gets the credit for being the first—or, at any rate, the first successful—hand-to-hand based Chinese martial arts film. In the case of directors such as Chang Cheh, wuxia simply evolved into something…different, documenting the adventures of desperate men seeking out the wisdom of reclusive masters in order to satisfy vendettas, while employing rare, sometimes completely fictional fighting styles and weapons. Lau Kar-leung often took the same path in his stories, with a bias toward authentic martial history and the teachings of Shaolin, while Yuen Woo-Ping, the internationally acclaimed choreographer for films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Matrix trilogy and Kill Bill movies, as well as a very prolific filmmaker in his own right, injected a hefty dose of slapstick humor into the genre, helping to launch the careers of performers such as Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung.As the years went on and the genre became more cemented, greater sophistication in film technique allowed for more visual daring in how fight scenes were staged, and more recently it seems that terrific kung fu movies don’t even have to come from China—the Thai-produced Ong Bak 2 and Indonesian The Raid: Redemption also have a place on this list, alongside some of the most impressive offspring of Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest. Most of the films presented here are confirmed classics, while others may still have a while to go before they’re recognized as being among the best of the genre. What most readers can agree on, I think, is that every movie discussed in this article promises great fun, no matter how many times you watch them.20. The Invincible ArmourGeneral Chow goes on the run after he’s accused of murdering the Ming sympathizer he works for, obsessed with finding the real killer and bringing him to justice. (Image credit: NetEase Games, Everstone Studio)Open world games have become a common feature of the gaming landscape, but that proves no barrier to excitement when it comes to Where Winds Meet. Drawing from wuxia fiction (martial arts adventure stories, popularized in the west by movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; and House of Flying Daggers), it'll offer you a variety of weapons and techniques to use while you explore a huge, wonderfully detailed world. You'll ride through fields, scramble along cliffs, race across rooftops, and more; all while having to bear in mind the danger of potential injuries and illnesses that will get worse if left untreated.Combat will be a significant part of the game, so getting this element right is important. "Weapons play a crucial role in enhancing the player's combat abilities," explains Everstone Studio's lead game designer, Soul. "We aim to authentically recreate a diverse array of unique weapons found in Eastern martial arts, including Spear, Sword, Fan, Double Sword, Umbrella, and Glaive. To enrich the gameplay experience, we focus on differentiating the characteristics of each weapon through their feel, movements, weight, speed, and attack angles. Additionally, we take into account the attributes of various enemies during weapon design. For instance, long-handled Spear and Glaive offer distinct advantages when facing mounted opponents."Blade developer(Image credit: Everstone Games)Where Winds MeetDeveloper: Everstone StudioPublisher: NetEase GamesPlatform(s): PC, PS5Release date: TBC 2025Just like wuxia movies, Where Winds Meet aims to impress with a mixture of realism and fantasy.
