Normally I open a folder of samples and note which ones get eliminated by the on-access scan. Then I launch the rest to see whether other forms of real-time malware protection prevent the infestation.As I did with Malwarebytes, I tested Power Eraser by installing four samples at a time, waiting for them to be fully active, and then running a cleanup scan. In each case, I first ran the Unwanted Application Scan, and in each case, it found nothing. I continued with a full System Scan. The samples don't always install the same collection of components, so I ran my hand-coded checking tool both before and after the cleanup.At the end of each scan, Power Eraser listed its findings. I had to exempt my checking tool from removal each time before clicking the Fix Now button. Each fix required a reboot, after which Power Eraser ran again to report its success. Based on these reports, and on my checking tool's before and after results, I determined that Power Eraser detected 87 percent of the samples, better than the 65 percent detection exhibited by Malwarebytes. However, as with Malwarebytes, its cleanup was spotty. My Symantec contacts confirmed that it doesn't attempt to clean up most Registry traces. In many cases it left behind executable files. The numerous leftover malware traces earned it an overall score of 7.8 points, with 10 being the maximum. On the same scale, Malwarebytes got 5.5.Power Eraser's 7.8 point score isn't bad. Yes, with their real-time protection both Norton Antivirus Basic and Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus earned a perfect 10 points. But perfection isn't necessarily the focus with Power Eraser.
