Trusting God to supply their daily needs. God promised them enough for two days since he commanded they not collect one day a week in order to worship Him. God provides enough and we receive his full blessing when we honor his call to a Sabbath rest. adult nonfictionAuthor 3 books3 followersSeptember 6, 2015This series by Priscilla Shirer is amazing! It helped me to see areas in my life where I wasn't making room for Sabbath. It challenged me to stop and consider what was most important in my life. She is a wonderful teacher. I encourage you to purchase the videos online through Lifeway to better enhance the reading of the book. If you are overworked and need a break but feel guilty about doing so - get this book, read it, and ask God for wisdom to learn to rest in Him.must-read93 reviews2 followersOctober 19, 2015This was my first Priscilla Shirer bible study. While at first i thought it lacked depth I soon realized that nothing concerning God is without reward. Stated in the book, "When we honor God's margins and the boundaries he has instituted, we endorse his authority, express our continued need for him, invite his favor in our lives, and bring honor to his name." When I take a break from my regular pattern of life I can see God.47 reviews2 followersJuly 16, 2015This study journal was a great primer for the concept of Sabbath for someone who had never really thought about Sabbath. The author forces the participant to realize it is the junk of worldliness that we are slaves to which keeps us from worship and margin. I coupled this study with other books including Sabbath in the Suburbs by M. Dana and Sabbath Keeping by L. Babb.March 6, 2015Really liked the topic of this book and wish it was a longer study. I also thought it would've been nice if the weekly work was broken up by day. Otherwise, Priscilla Shirer is a great speaker and very engaging.1 reviewOctober 21, 2015This was a great book. It made me really stop and think, A LOT! It is a book that I will take the principles from and use them for the rest of my life. Priscilla Shirer really has you reflect on the Sabbath in your life. It was really good!943 reviews24 followersReadOctober 22, 2018I LOVE Priscilla. I did not love this book.If you are need of a Sabbath, a margin, setting boundaries in your life then this book for you.678 reviews17 followersAugust 7, 2022I really loved this, and obviously I picked it up from the local Christian bookstore (along with a few other bible studies) because I was on a HUNT for something that would speak to me as I start my daily bible study routine. And this was the first/second thing I chose. I don't know Shirer well, but I really love her approach, and the accompanying videos were incredibly powerful (from a conference, instead of a studio-set add on). These Is power in prayer. Hustle and bustle of today’s overwhelmingly hurried schedule, workload, and mindset. I love the way Priscilla Shirer leads you to step back and evaluate where in your life you need more room to breathe. It may not be your schedule, maybe it’s your over stuffed home, closet or mind. This book is thought provoking and steeped in scripture to help you take a moment to stop and deeply inhale. Highly recommend BREATHE! 106 reviews6 followersNovember 17, 2021I enjoyed and learned a lot from this study. I am new to my journey with God (January 2021 new), so a lot of the terminology is still foreign to me. A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to do this study with her and I jumped at the chance! Priscilla Shirer did IG live videos instead of having to pay/rent the older videos that went with the study so that was fun to watch and interact. I had to do a lot of pausing to look things up to make sure I could understand fully as well as leaving a lot of questions blank because, at this stage, I just don't know how to answer them. This is definitely a study I will come back to and do again.2021749 reviewsMarch 28, 2024A great biblical view of taking a sabbath, creating space both in your week and your day but also creating space with your stuff. 4 stars instead of 5 because while its a good outline of why we need Sabbath it doesn’t give many suggestions for how to make that happen. I was also looking at this through the lens of mom with small kids and it feels pretty much impossible to get rest when one is home 24/7 with small kids. Also, while the videos make it more personal, I don’t think they are necessary. The important parts from the video gets repeated in the book anyway so if you have the book and don’t want to buy the video I think you’ll be fine. Author 8 books19 followersAugust 14, 2019I read Breathe in a Bible Study group, and honestly, I felt like the book was repetitive and not fulfilling in any way, for me. I can see how it would be useful for some people, but if you already have an inkling of knowledge about rest, and how to properly manage your time, this book won't be worth the time. We also watched the video teachings that went along with this book, and I found Shirer to be wonderful when she was softly speaking to a camera, but to have a mildly annoying preaching voice. That's just personal preference though, from someone who's sound sensitive. 81 reviews4 followersJanuary 5, 2020Nice and quick Bible Studies. This was not an in-depth study compared to other bibles studies done by Shirer, but the title is "breathe" so the relaxation of this study was fitting. There are so many areas in life that could have some margin or breathing space. Too much time 162 reviews1 followerDecember 10, 2016Love love love the accompanying videos, but there were several passages that I could not support her interpretation of Biblical texts. She has awesome, encouraging ideas, but several times it felt like her spin rather than Biblically based. Just recommend you read the referenced verses for yourself and see where the Spirit leads you for interpretation.99 reviews31 followersFebruary 14, 2021A powerful Bible Study! Priscilla breaks down the Armor of God into manageable, understandable and life changing bits. I won't pretend I understood all of her questions because I didn't. However, I got a better understanding when she went deeper in explanation and giving really good examples. This book challenged me to face hurts and how to respond to new or even forth coming trials. She gave awesome scripture references and tools to incorporate in my life to maximize my life while actually putting on and wearing the Armor of God.I paired this study with Havilah Cunnington book, Stronger than the Struggle (divinely inspired), causing both of these books to come alive and real in my heart and mind. Try it, you can thank me later. ;)ps: I am not by no means saying that these books couldn't stand alone and be powerful, just that when I combined them in my studies...🤯physical-copy purchasedAuthor 139 books2,960 followersApril 8, 2023Another excellent study from Priscilla Shirer. My Life Group just finished going through it. Priscilla’s teaching videos are very accessible. Just as we finished it, my home church began a study on hearing God’s voice, so the last video on the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God blended perfectly with what is coming next. And negative thoughts. In this book, Priscilla describes how to ward off all of them. She labels those things as attacks from the enemy. This alone was freeing, but she also provided excellent strategies to fight against those attacks. Plus, it seems obvious that she has dealt with things and is writing out of the pain and struggle in her own heart. As I prepare for a big life change, it was great to read and be reminded of the importance of prayer, and my identity in Christ.70 reviews2 followersSeptember 22, 2017If I could give this Bible study 10 stars, I would. I don't know if it's that this Bible study is the best I've ever done or that it just came at a time in my life when I most needed it... either way, it was amazing and life-changing for me. I went into it thinking that I already knew about the armor of God, but Priscilla Shirer put this in such a way that it was new and fresh, convicting, and incredibly applicable. I simply cannot rave about this study and Priscilla's teaching enough. Please do this study. It's worth it.Fervent Quotes by Priscilla Shirer - Goodreads
16 reviews15 followersDecember 12, 2016When I first started reading this I thought it was too vague and didn't give a lot of clear direction. As I continued, I began to think that my first impression was wrong, and I really came to enjoy that I wasn't babied through this study.I liked how the questions really made me consider my own life through the Truth being shared. It kept me from thinking of all the other people who needed to hear it and made me ask God what transformation would look like in my life. The Truth itself was hard to take in. God wants freedom for me, but do I want it for myself? I so often want to pick my version of freedom... it is always so much less than true freedom. Sabbath Freedom. What a wonderful gift. 284 reviews2 followersOctober 21, 2014What a perfect time in my life to go through this study. Coupled with Grace for the Good Girl - God knew what He was doing, didn't he?One of my favorite quotes was actually from another book within it by Richard Swenson, Margin/The Overload Syndrome, "God does not depend on human exhaustion to get His work done. God is not so desperate for resources to accomplish His purposes that we have to abandon the raising of our children in order to accommodate Him. God is not so despairing of where to turn next that He has to ask us to go without sleep five nights in a row. CHRONIC overloading is not a spiritual prerequisite for authentic Christianity. Quite the contrary, overloading is often what we do when we forget who God is."From Shirer, "Living free requires firm resolve to continue walking in it, resisting the attempts of this world and our Enemy to put chains back onto us again." We must be deliberate and intentional. non-fiction957 reviews22 followersApril 24, 2024Read this as a part of a Bible study at church. It completely missed the mark for me. I am a big proponent of Sabbath and all that implies but this book did not line up with my beliefs. Which is OK, I'm not the authority on anything, including Sabbathing. I disagreed with pretty much everything in the book except for the need for Sabbath. The approach, the biblical passages chosen, the interpretations of those passages, the examples used. None of it worked for me. For example, Shirer uses hoarding as an example of the need for Sabbath, seemingly unaware and insensitive to the fact that hoarding is a serious mental illness that isn't cured with a simple "pick up your room" approach.I would skip this and move on to one of her other books.faithAuthor 4 books2 followersFebruary 25, 2015Wow... who knew I was so tired?
