The news comes only a week after her character made an appearance in HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, and her passing was announced in a statement from her husband. Although known for her performances in 24, Bosch, and Timeless, gamers will best know Wersching for her performance as Theresa "Tess" Servopoulos in The Last of Us, a role for which she did motion-capture and voice acting. Geoff Keighley first teased the existence of Tess on his Twitter account shortly before the character featured in a trailer shown during the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards. Wersching also voiced a minor character, Tassyn, in Bioware's Anthem. Following a statement from her husband, Stephen Full, the official Twitter account of The Game Awards announced that "Annie Wersching... has sadly passed away from cancer at the age of 45." A follow-up tweet noted that a GoFundMe has been established to support her family, particularly her three boys who are between 4 and 12 years old. Details on the page reveal that Wersching "was diagnosed with cancer Summer of 2020," and that the news made her even more private than she had already been in an attempt to "protect her boys," and "live her life, on her terms, and be with her family." Tributes have since poured in from devastated fans, colleagues, and friends. Troy Baker, who voiced protagonist Joel Miller in The Last of Us, wrote "Annie, so much of Tess is what you imbued into the character." Joel and Tess are shown to be smuggling partners following a time-jump that occurs after the prologue, developing a ruthless reputation within the Boston black market that has been built up since the Cordyceps outbreak. If it was not for Tess being attacked by Robert's hired thugs on one fateful day, the pair would have likely never met Ellie. The Last of Us is currently streaming on HBO and the third episode is due to release today. Last week saw Anna Torv take on the role of Tess in a performance that has been universally celebrated. A panicked Tess implores Joel to press onwards to Bill and Frank’s with Ellie, revealing that she had been bitten in the clicker kerfuffle that took place in the museum. A dead Firefly reanimates and Joel quickly puts them down, however, in doing so he alerts a nearby horde of infected. Joel and Ellie make their escape while Tess stays behind to buy them some time, incinerating herself and the horde that breaches the State House. Torv is the latest actor to join The Last of Us, the television adaptation of the popular video game franchise. She'll play Tess, the smuggling partner of one of the story's main characters, Joel (Pedro Pascal).Variety broke the Last of Us Anna Torv casting news, revealing that the Australian actress will play the character of Tess, "a smuggler and hardened survivor in a post-pandemic world." In the original 2013 game, Tess serves as Joel's partner in crime in a world that's been overrun by a fungus that turns people into zombie-like creatures and in which the military has set up oppressive outposts and imposed curfews in major cities. Early in the game, Tess and Joel meet up with a woman named Marlene (Merle Dandridge), who promises to return some stolen merchandise to them if they deliver a young girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to a location across town, outside of the militarized quarantine zone.Let's just say the journey does not go smoothly, and the rest of the story involves Joel and Ellie traveling across the country to reach the leaders of a resistance group.Torv is perfectly suited to play Tess, a complex woman who has seen and done some dark things and is willing to make sacrifices to stay alive. Since her high-profile appearance on Mindhunter, in which she showed off some of that steely determination and vulnerability that she will likely get to utilize in the role of Tess, she has starred in an Australian television series called The Newsreader and is credited on IMDb as appearing in one episode of a miniseries called Fires, which is currently filming and appears to be about a series of bushfires that tore across Australia.The Last of Us, which is going to feature a budget of more than 10 million per episode, is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and video game writer and creative director Neil Druckman.
