Google added a new The Last of Us Easter egg to its massively popular search engine. Intrigued fans can see the Easter egg for themselves by searching for the name of the series on Google's website and clicking the red mushroom icon near the bottom of the screen. While the first click will only infect a small portion of the screen, subsequent clicks will rapidly spread Cordyceps until every corner of their device is overgrown with tendrils. If the infection grows too large, users can additionally click on the small cross next to the mushroom icon the clear the page of any unwanted fungus. The Last of Us' Cordyceps Cordyceps is a real genus of fungi infamous for its parasitic nature. While most species are only capable of infecting insects and other arthropods, The Last of Us introduced a mutated strain of the fungus, which grew inside of humans and took control over the hosts' bodies. Human hosts of the Cordyceps fungi grew increasingly aggressive as the infection progressed. Once the host fully succumbed to the Cordyceps' influence, they would attack any uninfected human on sight, further spreading the infection by biting their victims. While no such Cordyceps strain currently exists outside of The Last of Us, its real-world inspiration has caused anxiety among some of the franchise's followers. Fans of The Last of Us were previously alarmed by a report from the University of Alabama, which claimed there was a chance that harmless fungi may evolve into dangerous pathogens should global temperatures continue to rise -- a premise eerily similar to a scenario proposed by a character from HBO's Dog/Sony Interactive EntertainmentBloaters are the most advanced stage, and there are a few different variants within the group. We haven’t seen one of these on the show just yet, but HBO previously teased a Bloater in one of The Last of Us’ trailers. You can tell an infected is a Bloater because of the size — they’re big, grotesque, and, naturally, bloated with decaying mushroom bubbles. Bloaters and Shamblers are slower but really strong, and they can have a surge of energy to lunge toward an enemy. The layers of fungus act like armor, making them difficult to kill, too. They can also rip those growths off their bodies and throw them, sending damaging acid everywhere. If you get caught by a Bloater in the game, it’s an instant kill — and it rips your head in half through the jaw.Shamblers are basically waterlogged Bloaters found more on the West Coast in the games. The battle against the Rat King in The Last of Us Part 2 takes place in two stages, and the monster breaks apart into different infected.
