Scams.More From the Trend Micro ToolbarThe Trend Micro Toolbar installs as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, adding several security features. For starters, it color-codes links in results from an eclectic collection of search engines: Baidu, Biglobe, Bing, Goo, Google, Infoseek, OCN, and Yahoo. Clicking the toolbar button brings up a simple menu that, among other things, lets you turn on a feature that rates links on mouseover.(Credit: Trend Micro/PCMag)The Email Defender feature (formerly Fraud Buster) protects you against emails that don’t contain dangerous links or malicious attachments but may still represent a scam or fraud. It appears in the toolbar button’s menu and becomes enabled when you’re logged in to your Gmail account. On Windows, this feature also works with Outlook webmail accounts. I expected something similar to the email analysis performed by Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection or the Online Account Cleanup system in McAfee+, meaning I’d have to give Trend Micro full control of my account. However, just as in the Windows version, enabling it didn’t trigger an access request. Rather, it put a button at the bottom of each email to “check for potential threats in English or Japanese.”(Credit: Trend Micro/PCMag)In Chrome or Firefox (but not Safari), the Trend Micro Toolbar includes a social network privacy scanner. This feature ensures you've configured security properly on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You simply log into each account to let the scanner check your settings.By observation, Trend Micro doesn’t directly access your settings. Rather, it uses its position as a browser extension to view those settings. Facebook considers this a dangerous intrusion, so much so that it sent me a warning to change my password immediately. (Credit: Facebook/PCMag)Checking my notes from the last time I reviewed this antivirus and the time before, I found that its success was sporadic and its workings chaotic. Sometimes, it worked for a particular social media site, and sometimes, it didn’t. Its info-gathering worked in one browser but not the other. This time, it managed to gather enough information from Facebook to determine that I didn’t have any privacy problems. That worked in both browsers, but when I tried to view it again in Chrome, choosing Check Social Media Privacy from the browser extension’s menu did nothing.(Credit: Trend Micro/PCMag)When I signed in to Twitter in Chrome, Trend Micro didn’t manage to open the settings page. I had to try repeatedly, and even when it reached the correct page, it didn’t capture the desired information. In past reviews, the system advised me to hide my tweets from anyone who doesn’t follow me and disable finding my Twitter account based on my email address. That’s bad advice for someone who uses the platform to broadcast notes about new reviews. As for LinkedIn, in Firefox, it never went to the login page. When I tried it in Chrome, I logged in, but after 10 minutes, it still never supplied me with results. Under Windows, this feature doesn’t appear in the antivirus, only in the security suites. 11. Better value for money than Trend Micro, especially on its mid-tier plans. It has 4 plans — AntiVirus Plus, Standard, Deluxe, and Premium, each providing incremental cloud storage. If you have more than 1 device to protect, I suggest you go for the Deluxe or Premium plans because they support up to 5 and 10 devices, respectively.Although Trend Micro provides good protection, its plans are overpriced for the value they provide. I think “Maximum Security” provides the best value for money, as it includes most of the essential features of a decent antivirus. Try Norton 360 risk-freeUnfortunately, neither Norton nor Trend Micro offers a free plan, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try them out risk-free.Trend Micro provides several free tools and apps, such as “Virus Scan,” “Home Network Scan,” “Performance Scan,” and “Browsing History Scan.” It’s terrific to have such features if you want to use Trend Micro for free, but, unfortunately, they won’t provide perfect protection. For instance, when I downloaded the free virus scanner, it failed to detect some of the zero-day malware on my PC, providing a detection rate of 94%, which is lower than the industry average. Therefore, I won’t recommend using the free features if you’re looking for airtight protection for your device.Trend Micro also features a free tuneup app called “HouseCall” and “Mobile Security.” House Call scans your PC and Mac for vulnerabilities and fixes them. Similarly, Mobile Security protects your iPhone or Android phone from phishing scams and keeps online threats at bay,Trend Micro SysClean - Malware Spyware Scanner

Try Norton 360 risk-freeNorton’s virus scanner outperforms Trend Micro’s in all aspects — it’s faster, more accurate, and has minimal impact on system performance. It provides 3 scan options — Quick Scan, Custom Scan, and Full Scan.I ran Norton’s Full Scan and it detected 100% of the viruses I had planted on my testing machine, such as rootkits, trojans, and spyware. It took just 8 minutes for the full scan to complete, which was impressive since many other antiviruses took half an hour or even an hour to complete a full scan. More impressively, Norton’s Quick Scan only took 2 minutes!Norton’s scans are blazing-fast and not resource-intensive at all.Next, I tested Trend Micro’s virus scanner and was pleased to see that its full scan detected 100% of the viruses. However, it was much slower compared to Norton, both in the number of files it scanned and the time it took to scan them.Trend Micro’s virus scanner is accurate but much slower than Norton’s.Its full scan took 22 minutes to complete and checked 438,000 files. That’s the kind of speed you can expect from an average antivirus, so I was neither too happy nor dissatisfied with it. Microsoft also discontinued their Online Scanner and replaced it with Microsoft Safety Scanner (removal tool) which is also pretty good.Thanks. #14 Littlebits said: ESET is one of the few that remains to be a very good scanner, (good detection, very low false positives, good malware removal and decent scanning speed.)
