Pup has lots of energy and a 'can do!' attitude and wee Dragon is patient and thoughtful as he allows Pup to explore his harebrained ideas about how to catch the latest creature.The series shows how it's okay to try new ideas, make mistakes and forgive each other's blunders. Kids will enjoy the 'how to draw' activity at the back of each book and adults will enjoy tidbits of humour.These books, with bright and colourful illustrations, are a good pick for young readers who aren't quite ready to transition from picture books to chapter books. They're a nice intro into graphic novels which provide visual cues that will help kids build reading confidence.How to Catch a Unicorn: The two friends are back at it! In this adventure set in the zoo, Pup and Dragon try to help their friends catch a unicorn. How hard can that be? Despite some unicorn almost-sightings, it turns out, it's pretty hard. But they get to meet a gaggle of beasties in the zoo, as they try wacky new plans to capture the magical unicorn that keeps eluding them (but won't elude young readers!). Will their plans work? I appreciate that, and I think it resonates well with kids who are transitioning from picture books to a genre with a few more words. They will appreciate the continued adventures of Pup and Dragon as they chase a unicorn through the zoo. Readers get to see the overall picture of everything happening through the artwork while the dialogue focuses on Pup and Dragon's interactions and plans to help the kids catch the unicorn. In the end, Dragon learns an important lesson about friendship and sees how the zoo animals helped their friend escape each trap. He and Pup set off for home and look forward to their next adventure.A light humorous read with important messages underneath. This time Pup and Dragon are following the kids into the zoo and see that the kids are trying to catch a unicorn. Like the other books, Pup and Dragon come up with several unsuccessful plans that only wind up wrecking the kids' traps. Dragon eventually figures out that the zoo animals have been helping the unicorn avoid capture. This is a gently humorous story with a sweet friendship message.
